NEWBORN SESSION GUIDE.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Our Session.
A few weeks prior to your due date, I will check in with you via text. This will be a great time to discuss any questions that may come up or any concerns you may have. Once baby arrives, feel free to text, call, or email me to schedule our session date. Sessions ideally happen within the first 2-3 weeks from birth.
When we meet, know that my style is very casual and collaborative. If there are some poses you want to try or specific shots you want to get, don’t be afraid to ask. I’m here to work with you. I try to create an easygoing environment because creating keepsakes should be an enjoyable experience.
Depending on if your baby is sleepy or looking to interact when I arrive, that will determine the flow of the session. Do not stress if baby is not quite sleepy; because I take a lifestyle approach to the session, it is not required for baby to be asleep for the photos.
The session will take place by windows as I’ll be using natural light. Most common rooms used for these sessions are a living room, bedroom, or nursery. Let me know if you have a preference, or I can scope the area once I arrive and make my recommendation.
After the session, you will receive a link in your email for your photos within the time frame specified in our photo services agreement. Here you’ll be able to select your favorite photos and order from a wide variety of prints to savor the memories forever.
What Should We Wear?
Depending on the final look you’d like to go for, I am more than happy to make some recommendations on outfits. In general, I recommend sticking to a palette of 2-4 colors. That way you'll be coordinated but not too "matchy." In most situations, I also recommend Mom to pick the outfit she loves first then have the family outfits coordinate around it :)
Solid, earthy, neutral colors look best in my bright style of photography. Large patterns or logos are not recommended as they can look distracting but having one family member in a subtle pattern and mixing textures can create beautiful accents.
You can check out my Spring family Pinterest board for some inspiration.
No matter what, make sure that what you wear makes you feel good! It will resonate in your photos.
Preparing Your Baby
Feed your baby just before the session. If on-location, you can arrive a little early to feed. This way baby will be satisfied and ready for some portraits. It can also help make sure baby is a little sleepy for the session to get some tender sleeping moments.
My style is very minimal so there are no elaborate props. This allows the family and the moment to shine. I will take swaddled photos and any outfits that you’d like, but I do recommend outfits with snaps for removal so that the baby is not too aggravated with clothing being pulled over their heads.
If the photo session is at your home, make sure it’s very warm to keep baby comfortable.
Preparing The Family
If older siblings are joining in, frame the photo session as a fun event! If your kids like to pick their outfits regularly, let them be a part of the process in selecting their outfits (out of 2-3 of your faves, of course :) This helps them look forward to the special day.
Make sure your kids are not hungry and are well-rested. Depending on the baby, we will take either the family photos at the beginning or the end of the session. This is also when we’ll plan to take sibling photos so they do not have to be attentive for the entire session. Newborn sessions take approximately 2 hours to allow periods of rest and feeding for baby.
